A Tale of Two Walks (as told by the Dog)
Hi. Yes, hello. It’s me. The four-pawed member of the story.
You may know me as “NO! NO! NO!,” “GET BACK HERE,” or my personal favorite, “DROP IT RIGHT NOW.”
I’d like to tell you a story. Well, actually, two stories.
Same dog (that’s me!). Same human. And two very different walks.
The Chaos Era
Ah, yes. The early days.
The leash comes out. I lose my mind, obviously.
This is not my fault. The leash is made of pure excitement.
I have to yank my human out the door because, omg, they are taking way too long. We (finally) step outside and—WOW—the world is happening.
Every smell must be smelled…immediately. Preferably all at once. I pull, hard. My human says something like “heel” or “easy” or “please stop dragging me,” but honestly, I’m too busy to care.
There’s a squirrel.
There’s another squirrel.
There’s… a leaf that moved suspiciously.
I lunge. I zig. I zag. I choke myself a little but keep going because commitment to pee on everything is important.
Wait. Stop everything. There is another dog over there and it looked at me. I have to protect my human from this obvious danger so I do my best to be loud and threatening.
For some reason, my human is not thrilled with my superior protection skills.
Throughout our walk, the leash is tight and we are both tense. There is a lot of “no,” “leave it,” and one memorable moment where my human almost face-planted because I spotted a Very Urgent Pigeon Situation.
Once, my human let me run free on a camping trip. It was glorious, but apparently I am “not trustworthy off-leash.”
Which feels rude, but okay, I did ignore being called that one time. And the other time. And… ok, every time.
We both come home… tired.
But not the good kind of tired.
Time for Professional Help
At some point, my human decided we needed help.
We started learning things. Real things. Not just “sit for a treat” but like… how to walk together. How to pay attention. How to exist in the world without acting like I’ve had twelve espressos.
It turns out:
- Walking nicely is a skill
- Listening is also a skill
- I can pass by other dogs with just a friendly sniff
- And squirrels… will still be there later
It was hard at first. There were expectations. Boundaries. Words I had to actually respond to.
But it felt kind of good, too. Like my human had a plan, and I could relax a little. Things started to click — and our relationship changed for the better, too.
The New Calm
Now when the leash comes out, I still get excited but it’s more of a “let’s go do something fun together” and less “launch into orbit.”
My human leads me outside.
The leash is loose. Like… relaxed, even.
My human is walking upright. Actually smiling.
I check in. They check in. We move forward together.
I still notice things (because hello, I’m a dog) but I don’t feel like I have to chase every single one. Turns out, I can look at a squirrel without becoming one with the squirrel.
Groundbreaking.
And here’s the really cool part…
Sometimes… the leash comes off.
I KNOW!
Instead of sprinting into the horizon like a furry outlaw, I stay close. I explore, but I keep my human in sight. And when they call me?
…I actually go back.
Because it’s the right thing to do, and I like this pack.
Because I’m part of a team now.
The Difference Is Everything
We’re the same dog and human in the same world full of squirrels and smells.
But everything feels different.
Back then:
- Walks felt like a tug-of-war (I was winning, by the way)
- My human was stressed
- I was overstimulated
- Off-leash? Absolutely not happening
But now:
- Walks feel calm, connected, and actually enjoyable
- My human trusts me (huge upgrade)
- I know what’s expected, and I can succeed
- On-leash or off-leash… I am so good at this now!
Turns out, enjoying our walks wasn’t really about the leash.
It’s about the relationship.
