Paws and Patriotism: Pet-Friendly Memorial Day Fun in the White Mountains

Memorial Day weekend is a time to reflect on those heroes lost in service of our country. Though the holiday is solemn, it’s also recognized as the unofficial kickoff to summer—and what better way to honor it than with your furry best friend by your side? If you’re heading to the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire, you’re in for a treat (and so is your pet). Here’s a roundup of pet-friendly adventures that’ll make tails wag and spirits soar!

Tail-Wagging Hikes at Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, NH

If your pup loves a good sniff and stroll, the trails at Castle in the Clouds are a must. While pets aren’t allowed on the mansion lawns, in the trolley, or inside buildings, the 28 miles of hiking trails are fair game—and pet-approved!

With gorgeous scenic views this spot is perfect for an on-leash outdoor adventure with your four-legged friends.

Pet Tip: Keep your pup leashed and bring poop bags. Trail etiquette makes everyone’s experience more pawsitive.

Roll into Fun at Great Glen Trails in Pinkham Notch, NH

Over in Pinkham Notch, Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center is a playground for nature lovers—and many of the activities are pet-friendly, too. While your dog may not be hopping into a kayak anytime soon, the 17 miles of carriage roads and scenic walking paths are great for leashed walks with stellar mountain views.

Want to get in a good workout while your pup soaks up the sniffs? Take a bike ride while your furry friend trots along (just make sure they’re comfortable with the pace).

Pet Tip: Dress your pup in their warmest jacket and come back in the winter for skiing, snowshoeing and tubing!

Quackin’ Good Time at the Wildquack Duck Race in Jackson, NH

Head to Jackson, NH on Sunday, May 25th for the 34th Annual Wildquack Duck Race & Music Festival—a small-town event that’s big on charm. With live music, food vendors, and a whimsical race of rubber duckies down the river, it’s the kind of day your dog can enjoy right alongside you.

Stroll the park, share a bite of kettle corn, and enjoy a relaxed, pet-welcoming atmosphere. This event is outdoors and perfect for social pups who love being part of the crowd.

Pet Tip: Bring your pup’s favorite toy so he doesn’t steal the race duckies!

Chow and Cheer in Waterville Valley, NH

Waterville Valley is buzzing with Memorial Day weekend activities, and while a few are more human-focused, there’s still plenty for you and your pup to enjoy:

  • Live Music in Town Square: Stretch out on the grass or paddle around Corcoran Pond while catching tunes from the gazebo. Pets are welcome in the square, and it’s a great place to people-watch.

  • Chowderfest (Sunday, May 25): While the seafood samples are for humans, your pup will love the attention they get from your fellow chowder lovers.

  • Youth Fishing Derby (Saturday, May 24): Kids will be reeling in trout, and dogs will be drooling at the action. (Just keep curious noses clear of hooks!)

Pet Tip: Make it a picnic! Bring a dog-safe treat and enjoy lunch by the pond.

Final Thoughts for Memorial Day in the White Mountains

Whether your pet is the adventurous trailblazer or the laid-back festival-goer, Memorial Day in the White Mountains offers something for every human-animal duo. Just remember to pack water, snacks, poop-bags, and a sense of adventure!
