Hiker with dog on a mountain

Tail-Wagging Tips for Hiking with your Dog

There’s no better way to enjoy the stunning fall-to-winter transition than by celebrating “National Hike with Your Dog Day” on November 17th! Hiking with your dog isn’t just about exercise; it’s a time for you and your pup to bond, explore, and spend some pawsitive time together.

Here’s why hiking with your furry friend is so rewarding, plus a few things to keep in mind to make your trail time smooth, safe, and fun!

It’s Great Exercise

Hiking provides a fantastic workout for both of you! The varied terrain and elevation changes make it an ideal full-body exercise, improving cardiovascular health and strengthening muscles. For dogs, hiking can provide excellent physical conditioning, improving stamina, and keeping them agile. And let’s not forget it helps both of you work off all those treats!

It’s Mentally Stimulating

Beyond physical exercise, hiking stimulates your dog’s mind in ways a backyard romp can’t match. Every twist and turn on the trail, every new scent, and even the occasional squirrel sighting, is an exciting adventure for them. This mental enrichment reduces stress, helps curb boredom, and can even help prevent behavior problems at home. (And it can have a similar positive effect on you, too.)

It Helps You Bond

There’s something magical about unplugging, exploring together, and sharing a space that’s both peaceful and invigorating. Hiking with your dog builds a stronger bond through teamwork, trust, and shared moments. Plus, watching your dog’s tail wag with each new discovery is bound to make your heart happy!

It Reduces Stress

A hike with your pup is a chance for both of you to relax, reset, and escape from daily routines. Your companion is highly attuned to your feelings and when you take the time to relax, they’ll be more relaxed too! It’s a great reason to prioritize making an effort to get out into nature and de-stress with a nice hike!

Now that you know just how amazing a good hike with your furry friend can be, here are a few things to consider before hitting the trails!

Choose Dog-Friendly Trails

Luckily, there are few restrictions in the White Mountain area of New Hampshire as far as hiking with your dog goes. However some trails, particularly if they are near a campground or bike trail, may require leashes.

Be Prepared

Trail time is much more enjoyable when both you and your pal are prepared! Bring a leash, doggie waste bags, some snacks or treats (for both of you!) and of course, don’t forget a collapsible bowl and plenty of water.

Respect Wildlife and Other Hikers

New Hampshire is home to diverse wildlife. Keeping your dog on a leash helps ensure the safety of both your four-legged companion and the woodland critters.

When it comes to passing other hikers, keep your dog by your side, and be mindful of giving plenty of space on narrow paths. Trail etiquette is essential, and honestly, it’s just a nice thing to do!

Practice Leave No Trace

We all want to keep New Hampshire’s trails beautiful, so pack out what you bring in! Bring waste bags to clean up after your pup and dispose of them properly. Keeping the trails clean ensures that they remain enjoyable for everyone.

Hiking with your pup is the perfect way to enjoy quality time and fresh mountain air. So leash up, hit the trails, and make your hike a tail-wagging adventure!
